What to think about over your break...
I'm sure you don't need me to suggest things to think about over your well earned break - but here's a short list of things to consider for your online business next year.
Check your web site content for time based statements.
Everyone tries to do add the best content to their web site but now is a good time to run through check for any time bound syntax issues - look for phrases that say "this year", "next year", "last year" etc - and replace with "in 2010", "in 2011" or "in 2009".
A great example would be "Next year NZ hosts the Rugby world cup" - not a good look for a loved and cared for web site.
See how your web site fits in search engines...
Test your web site is search engines - use those phases that you would like people to find you on - are you listing well for them.? If not create some content and add that to your web site as a new page.
Check all your links "from" and "to" your web sit still work.
Over time "link rot" can set in for every web site. This is where you may have linked to a really great resource through the year - but the resource has now disappeared.
There are tools such as "Xenu" (http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html) to use to find those links on your web site that may have stopped working.
Also check the links "to" your web site - these may be used in your signature file or as links from other advertising - especially check these if you have several domain names in use.
Check your "Brands", "Products" and "Services".
Over the year your service offering may have changed - it's amazing how many web sits that I see that do not reflect the current range of product or services that are available.
Check your "About Us" page.
As above - is all of your team still represented.? Have they undertaken study or have an updated profile or picture.?
Remove any inactive social media tools.
We've always said - some people just aren't made to blog or tweet - now is a good to admit that you haven't been keeping the blogs or tweets or Facebook up to date.
Make the last post saying that you are closing it down - point followers to your web site, download the list of followers - and then delete the social media tool and remove any links from your web site.
So enough of the clean out - what about the future.?
Having some time off working "in" your business also allows you to assess some ways of working "on" your business.
Think about - and research how other companies are using social media tools that you haven't yet used - the internet is a great resource on the various tools and how to get the best results from using them - take the time off as a learning opportunity.
Think about using some of the new online "web 2.0" tools in your business - such as Google Docs, VendHQ or Xero.
Is there a new tool that runs "in the cloud" that could replace a paid for piece of software and maybe does a better job.?
Think about the current mobile / location based phenomenon that is taking place overseas - can your business leverage having a FourSquare account.? Are you on Google Maps.?
We hope you have a great Christmas break - and do let us know if you would help or guidance in any of the items above.
I'll be doing some more seminars in Rotorua and hopefully more in The Coromandel - have a safe one and all the best for 2011.
