Using other domain names for fun and profit
Have you ever wanted to really track an advertising campaign or trade show attendance down to the last visitor or pair of eyeballs...?
Is it really worth us attending that trade show to display our wares when we seem to get leads from it – but we’re not sure how far the awareness of our company has spread?
Spending money on advertising or marketing without a measurement mechanism in place doesn’t make sense in normal times let alone when things are tight and every business cost is under review.
Wasting money is never a great business model…
You can use a new domain name that is separate from your main business web site to measure marketing campaigns or trade show attendance.
Then you can use the statistics that come with your hosting account with us – or using Google Analytics to really get some hard numbers on the response rates of your effort.
And it gets better – imagine the power of a trade show attendee visiting your web site from the address on the trade show information and seeing:
“Welcome trade show attendee – here’s exactly what you are looking for…”
Simply ask us to register a domain name – such as “www.AprilOffer.co.nz” or “www.FieldDays09.co.nz” and point that to a special section that you have created on your web site.
The section would contain your main branding of course – and would contain information about your products or services targeted just to the attendees of the trade show or viewers of the marketing.
Links would still be in place to “drill down” for information about you and the products on your normal web site and the calls to action could also be the same or contain some kind of special offer.
Use the new domain name on all marketing efforts for the trade show or as the “call to action” for the marketing campaign.
The stats will tell you how many people responded to the effort and your sales will tell you how many converted into customers.
There are only small costs involved to implement the above ideas for a web site – just domain name fees and a time cost for you to create the content.
Domain names are currently $35 excl GST per annum but soon (1st July 2009) they will be going up to $45 excl GST per annum.

Here are a few ideas how you could use Webinars:
A wedding caterer could use them for prospective customer once per week to run through their full service list with example photos of layouts and options for that special day.
A bed and breakfast operator could host a Webinar with a walk though of the rooms available as well as some ideas of local sights and places to visit.
A professional services consultant could use the Webinar to give some tips and hints about improving their customer's bottom line.
If a new client visited your web site they could register online for the upcoming Webinar easily and quickly.
If a potential new client contacts you during the week then let them know the Webinar will be available - it's a great way of getting engagement in an interactive way.
Delicious is a social bookmarking web site that lets you add bookmarks to your account so that you can access them from any computer – and also share them with friends.
It also allows you to get a feel for how popular the web sites are that you bookmark which is a good thing when thinking of entering into linking relationships – or validating the claims of a listing web site such as an industry specific portal.
You install a small script into your browser that you click to add a bookmark when you are visiting an interesting web site – enter some tags (these work like categories) and it’s all done.
You can have some of the links Private if you want to or all the links.
You can also use the tool to find what other people are bookmarking – so it’s a great way to search for interesting information around the web.
